Rosberg Addresses Speculation of Mercedes Return Amid Hamilton’s Departure

9 months ago By Sports Desk

Nico Rosberg, the 2016 Formula 1 world champion, has categorically ruled out any possibility of returning to the sport in light of Lewis Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes. While the search was on for a replacement for the coveted place in the German team, Rosberg made it clear that a return to Formula 1 was not part of his plans.

In an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the 38-year-old German driver said that his time in Formula 1 is over and he has no intention of returning. Rosberg retired from the sport at the end of the 2016 season, just after winning his first and only world title with Mercedes.

Regarding a possible return, Rosberg stressed: “It’s over. I didn’t plan any return.” He emphasized the intense training required to compete at the highest level, suggesting that the quick reactions and precision required had diminished after the long layoff.

While several names have been mentioned as potential candidates to replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes for the 2025 season, including Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso, Rosberg has ruled himself out of consideration. Speculation surrounding Hamilton’s departure has fueled discussions over who will work with George Russell next season.

An interesting twist in the Mercedes saga is the possible signing of a short-term swap deal. This could serve as a transition phase, giving young talent Andre Kimi Antonelli time to gain more experience before perhaps moving full-time to Formula 1. A candidate for the Mercedes academy, Antonelli recently won the FRECA title at the age of 17 and will join Formula 1 in 2024 2 with Prema Racing.

Rosberg’s decision to rule out the idea of a comeback leaves Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff with the task of finding a suitable replacement for Hamilton. Known for his ability to nurture young talent, Wolff could explore several options for the long-term development of promising drivers such as Antonelli.

As expectations grow for the 2024 season and the seat for the 2025 campaign remains vacant, the Formula 1 community is eagerly awaiting resolution of this major mystery surrounding Mercedes and the vacancy left by Lewis Hamilton.
