BMW’s WorldSBK to MotoGP Transition: Success a Prerequisite

6 months ago By Sports Desk

BMW is looking closely at a possible jump to MotoGP in the near future. With new regulations planned for 2027, the German team is considering competing at motorcycling’s highest level, but with one crucial condition: success in WorldSBK comes first.

BMW Motorrad CEO Markus Flasch has made it clear that any move to MotoGP will only come after a convincing performance in WorldSBK. In an exclusive interview with Speedweek.com, Flasch emphasized that success is a must in superbike competition. He said: “For me, there’s no way to get promoted without being successful. For me it’s out of the question.”

BMW’s promising performance at the start of the 2024 season, with Toprak Razgatlioglu taking three wins in the first three stages, is raising speculation about a possible move to MotoGP. However, Flasch stressed that the decision will be based on a careful and widely supported assessment within the company.

Flasch explained: “It will be a measured and widely supported decision. Any big decision like this is widely supported in a company like BMW, and the preparation has to be done carefully and reasoned.”

Changes to the MotoGP regulations for 2027, including less aerodynamics, a ban on hole-shooting devices and ride height, as well as a requirement for 100% non-fossil fuel, set the stage for a more balanced and challenging competition. Flasch acknowledges the importance of preparing for this evolving scenario, but reiterates that the main focus remains on WorldSBK.

While BMW keeps its eyes on the future, they are committed to succeeding in the present. Flasch stressed: “We can prepare at the same time, but I will only make a decision if we are successful. We look at this strategically.”

The team’s consistent performance in WorldSBK is key to any future move into MotoGP. Flasch emphasized the importance of long-term stability, ensuring that every decision is carefully considered and supported by the entire company.

As fans eagerly await how events unfold, BMW is focusing on consolidating its position as a powerhouse in WorldSBK before exploring new horizons in MotoGP. With the 2024 season in full swing, the motorcycle world is waiting to see if BMW will achieve its goal in WorldSBK and finally make the successful transition to MotoGP.
