5 Greatest Spanish Racers Of All Time In F1 History

11 months ago By Sports Desk

When it comes to motorsports, Spain has always been a dominant force. Spain possesses a wealth of motorsport history, spanning from innovators to pioneers.

Having been held annually since 1968, the Spanish Grand Prix is among the oldest Grand Prix worldwide.

Regarding Formula One, however, there are only 15 Spanish drivers in the race; of those, only four have finished on the podium, and one has only managed to finish first. Here is a ranking of the five greatest Spanish racers of all time in Formula 1 history.

1. Fernando Alonso:

As the first and only Spaniard to win an F1 driver’s title, Fernando is regarded as one of the all-time great F1 racers. With Renault in 2005 and 2006, he captured back-to-back titles. The most-started driver in Formula One history, he has completed 377 races and recorded 32 victories, 106 podiums, 22 poles, and 24 fastest laps. That makes him a genuine motorsport icon in Spain.

2. Carlos Sainz Jr.:

Carlos Sainz Jr. is steadily establishing himself in the motorsport industry, much like his father did. With the exception of Fernando Alonso, he is the only other Spaniard to have won two Grand Prix throughout his Formula One career. He finished on the podium 18 times and won two races in his F1 career, making him one of the most successful Spaniards currently competing in the sport.

3. Alfonso de Portago:

Alfonso de Portago is among the four Spaniards who have achieved a podium finish in Formula One. While his racing career was cut short due to a tire burst while traveling at 150 mph on a perfectly straight road during the Mille Miglia, which killed him, his navigator, and nine onlookers, he still deserves more respect. The incident happened close to the village of Guidizzolo.

4. Paco Godia:

Despite this, Pack Godia’s Formula One career was devoid of podium finishes. His driving prowess was greatly admired, and he left a lasting impression on Spanish motorsport.

5. Carlos Sainz Sr.-

During his tenure on the Formula One grid, Carlos Sainz’s father had a notable influence. Despite his lack of race victories in Formula One, his incredible speed and style of racing made a lasting impression on the sports world.

Spain, a very beautiful and sporty country is a major hub of football. Home to the world’s biggest football clubs, like Real Madrid,Barcelona is Spain. But not only great footballers are born here. Motorsports legends and greats are also from this place. The before mentioned players are the living example of it.

So, these are some of the excellent F1 talents that Spain has provided over the years. A very sporty country, Spain has always given superb athletes and contributions in the world of sports. Motorsports is no exception.
